The state Department of Agriculture reported that a young, feral cat in Wyoming County recently tested positive for rabies. Department spokesman William Nichols confirmed on Tuesday that the kitten lived in a feral colony living along Englewood Drive in Washington Twp. The cat was discovered and tested last week, he said. Results obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of Health Laboratory in Exton revealed the cat had rabies. Nichols advised people should be extra careful under such circumstances. Two people are missing while another is presumed dead after a barge sank early Tuesday off Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture, the Japan Coast Guard said. The 100-ton boat carrying sand with six crew members sank at about 3:40 a.m. after sending a distress signal, the coast guard said. The coast guard pulled an unconscious man, a Fukuoka city resident, from the water but he didn't have a pulse and wasn't breathing. As if missing the solar eclipse wasn't enough, heavy rain continued to batter Sioux Falls for most of the afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, the storm moving through the area will stay with us until around 10 p.m. tonight. Anthrax is responsible for dead cattle in southeastern Pennington County, South Dakota, State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven confirmed Monday, Aug. 21. At least nine adult cattle in the heard that had not been vaccinated against anthrax died suddenly last week. Anthrax spores survive indefinitely in contaminated alkaline soils. All areas of South Dakota are susceptible to an outbreak, especially when there are significant climate changes such as drought, floods and wind, which can expose anthrax spores to grazing livestock.
